UN PAÑUELO SEDIENTO

2009. Performance presented in Setba gallery, Barcelona. Material: intervened texts by the participants, from the poem “Elegia” by Miguel Hernández. Videographic projection of a Hindu funeral.

(CAT)

This performance, that took place on the 27th of January 2009, was thought as a tribute to Miguel Hernández for the gallery Setba in Barcelona. On this occasion the authors worked from a text: the elegy that the poet dedicated to his friend Ramón Sijé in 1936. The title un pañuelo sediento consists in a poetic image extracted from one of the verses of his piece El rayo que no cesa. A handkerchief is an object created to collect, in the poem by Miguel Hernández, tears, sweat, blood (pain, death, fatigue).

The assistants had to cover parts of the text with corrector tape leaving visible only the words that resonated the most within them as they read. As the interventions were completed the results were hung on the wall, leaving in sight the new poems that had emerged from different experiences. This way, intervening in continuous and multiple ways on the same poem gives a different and multiplied meaning to the original poem, as individual experiences are contributed. The initial poem acts like multiple seed that the performers/sowers spread during the action.

I cast the net, scatter the seed’s stock, amoung roe, waters, furrows and poppies, sowing and fishing along, anxious heart and cheek!”.
(M. Hernández)

During the performance, on one wall of the room, a video without audio of a Hindu funeral was projected, filmed by the artists in the Himalaya. The projection was a visual device that intensified the tone of the farewell of a loved one (Ramón Sijé, friend of Miguel Hernández) a performative farewell, slow and integrative.

The experience of creating though emptying, and to make something personal appear exclusively with another’s words and one’s own silences, was very profitable for all, approximately fifty, participants.
